DIY Tassel Chandelier
I had been eyeing the pink Fela Anthropologie tassel chandelier for quite some time, until it ran out of stock. Anthropologie finally came out with another similar chandelier, but the new black and gold version was not going to work for my daughter’s pink hued room. Other companies started carrying the popular chandelier, but the price was starting to seem ridiculous for something I was sure I could make for less than $50.
I had been toying with the idea of making a knockoff version, and finally decided to go for it when I entered the Better Homes and Gardens sponsored event known as the One Room Challenge.
Where to Begin
I started by tearing apart an old lamp shade in order to use the round metal frame as my first tier. This would be the main part of the frame that holds the pendant light kit.
Using some chain from another project, 6 tiny eye-hooks, and a pair of pliers, I was able to connect the wire frame to two embroidery hoops for a tiered effect.
Wrapping the Tassels
You can simply wrap yarn around a hardcover book to create the tassels you need.
I needed 75 tassels total, and decided that each tassel needed 40 wrap arounds with the thickness of the yarn I was using. Wrapping 75 tassels is not an easy task, and so I created a wooden tool that made wrapping the tassel around and tying the knots a little easier.
You can use also DIY a piece of cardboard into a tassel maker, but I liked that the wood was rigid and allowed me to notch some slits into the wood for easier ties.
Overall, I used about 2.5 large skeins of yarn for this project.
